Demographic-aware word associations
نویسندگان
چکیده
Variations of word associations across different groups of people can provide insights into people’s psychologies and their world views. To capture these variations, we introduce the task of demographicaware word associations. We build a new gold standard dataset consisting of word association responses for approximately 300 stimulus words, collected from more than 800 respondents of different gender (male/female) and from different locations (India/United States), and show that there are significant variations in the word associations made by these groups. We also introduce a new demographic-aware word association model based on a neural net skip-gram architecture, and show how computational methods for measuring word associations that specifically account for writer demographics can outperform generic methods that are agnostic to such information.

The Use of the Word “‘Ishq” in Religious Texts
Some Muslim thinkers have had disagreements over the use of the word “‘ishq” in religious texts since many years ago. The main claim made by those who prohibit the use of this word for the sacred associations such as God, the Prophet (s), and Imāms is that the meaning of this word is appropriate only to the material and carnal issues and so, it has not been used in religious texts and its conce...
متن کاملMen Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: Evaluation and Modelling of Verbal Associations
We present a quantitative analysis of human word association pairs and study the types of relations presented in the associations. We put our main focus on the correlation between response types and respondent characteristics such as occupation and gender by contrasting syntagmatic and paradigmatic associations. Finally, we propose a personalised distributed word association model and show the ...
متن کاملJapanese Word―Color Associations with and without Contexts
Although some words carry strong associations with specific colors (e.g., the word danger is associated with the color red), few studies have investigated these relationships. This may be due to the relative rarity of databases that contain large quantities of such information. Additionally, these resources are often limited to particular languages, such as English. Moreover, the existing resou...
متن کاملSexual function in multiple sclerosis and associations with demographic, disease and lifestyle characteristics: an international cross-sectional study
BACKGROUND Sexual dysfunction (SD) is very common in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) and contributes a significant burden of disease, particularly for young people. SD has direct neurological contributions from depression and fatigue, which occur commonly in PwMS. Modifiable factors may represent potential targets for treatment and prevention of SD. We aimed to assess the prevalence of SD...
متن کاملHypothesizing Word Association From Untagged Text
This paper reports a new method for suggesting word associations, based on a greedy algorithm that employs Chisquare statistics on joint frequencies of pairs of word groups compared against chance co-occurrence. The benefits of this new approach are: 1) we can consider even low frequency words and word pairs, and 2) word groups and word associations can be automatically generated. The method pr...
